About the study

DACAT is a multi-site clinical trial (NCT06406114) designed to improve the diagnosis of cephalosporin allergy. Because cephalosporins share similar chemical structures, many patients are unnecessarily labeled as allergic and restricted from using these important antibiotics. This study will enroll 300 participants across sites and use standardized double-blind skin testing and drug challenges to confirm or rule out suspected cephalosporin allergy and to develop an optimal, evidence-based diagnostic approach.

The Drug Allergy and Desensitization Program examines patients’ drug allergies to first-line, and often life-saving, medications, ranging from antibiotics to chemotherapeutics. Kimberly Blumenthal, MD, MSc

Kimberly Blumenthal, MD, MSc is an allergist/immunologist and clinician investigator at the Mayo Clinic in Florida and Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She is also Vice Chair of Research for the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Blumenthal was the Co-Director of the Rheumatology and Allergy Clinical Epidemiology Research Center and Director of Research in the Center for Drug and Vaccine Allergy at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Blumenthal is an internationally recognized drug allergy expert who’s clinical and population research has been published in leading high-impact manuscripts such as NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, and the BMJ. Dr. Blumenthal graduated from Columbia University, studied medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, studied clinical epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and completed internal medicine and allergy/immunology training at Massachusetts General Hospital.
